The language policy of the European Schools contains clear guidelines regarding changes of the language section or of the language of instruction.
- Change of language section (L1): Only possible in justified exceptional cases, such as proven severe learning difficulties or changes in family circumstances. The change must be pedagogically justified and is approved by the school administration or the director.
- Change of L2 (language of instruction for some subjects in secondary level): Generally not permitted, since, for example, the European Baccalaureate (BAC) is tied to the chosen L2. Exceptions are extremely rare and require a formal approval process.”
- Change of L3 or additional languages: Possible, but only at designated times and under pedagogical guidance.
The goal is to ensure stability in the learning biography and to secure the linguistic prerequisites for later subject instruction.
Request for language change
During the first year (S1), no subject or language changes are possible.
The following procedure applies to:
- Language change from P5 to S1
- Language changes from S2 to S5
Preface
Any change can only take place at the beginning of the school year. A change cannot be requested or approved at the end of the first semester.
Applications must be submitted to the school administration by June 1 at the latest for the following school year. This deadline allows the parties involved (school administration, cycle/BAC coordinators, and the relevant subject teachers) to make a well-informed decision and, if necessary, prepare a test.
Mandatory steps for each change request
- Parents or the adult student complete the following online form via the affected student’s online account, clearly indicating the requested change.
- After obtaining approval from the school administration, the cycle/BAC coordinator reviews whether the requested change is feasible.
- If the change requires a placement test, the cycle/BAC coordinator contacts the coordinator of the relevant subject area to schedule the date, time, and location of the test.
- The cycle/BAC coordinator informs the parents or the adult student about:
- the possibility or impossibility of the requested change;
- the date of any required test;
- the material that needs to be prepared.
- Based on prior experience with the student and, if applicable, the test results, the class council makes its informed decision at the end of the school year and records it on the report card.
- The cycle/BAC coordinator then:
- communicates the decision to the parents;
- informs the relevant IT department staff and the school office about the change.
